Problem Sanding Ebony with Holly Inlay
One of the most popular bracelet designs (and I like it too) is Ebony with Holly Inlay. I’ve had trouble with it though. When I sand the bracelet after turning the Holly gets contaminated with dust from the Ebony. I don’t have a problem like this with most of the other hardwoods I’m using.
I showed this to my friend Jim Echter (True Creations Woodturning) at the Finger Lakes Wood Turners and he indicated I wasn’t alone in the experience. Jim suggested that I do a final pass with a scraper and call it good. I tried that and then went a step further. I took a fine shaving with the scraper and then lacquered the piece.
After lacquering, I sanded lightly, then lacquered and sanded again and laquered. This works for me.
